GA4 Conversion Tracking: A Practical Checklist Before You Spend on Ads

A practical GA4 conversion tracking checklist: key events, consent mode, ad platform linking and offline conversions to check before you spend on ads.

Before you put another dollar into Google Ads or Meta Ads, make sure you can see what that dollar does. Ad platforms optimise toward whatever you tell them is a conversion. If tracking is broken, duplicated or missing, the algorithms optimise toward the wrong thing — and you pay for it. This checklist covers what to verify in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) before you scale spend.

1. Decide what actually counts as a conversion

Start with the business, not the tool. List the actions that genuinely indicate a potential customer:

  • Contact or quote form submitted (confirmed by a thank-you state, not just a button click)
  • Call booked through your scheduling tool
  • Phone call clicked on mobile
  • Purchase completed (for e-commerce)
  • Qualified lead or closed deal (imported later from your CRM)

Then separate primary conversions — the ones ad platforms should optimise for — from secondary micro-conversions like scroll depth or video views, which are useful for analysis but should not drive bidding.

2. Check the foundations of your GA4 property

  • One GA4 property and one web data stream for the site — no duplicate tags firing from both a plugin and Google Tag Manager.
  • Data retention set to 14 months (the default is 2) so year-on-year comparisons work.
  • Internal traffic filter defined for your office and team IP addresses.
  • Unwanted referrals excluded, such as payment gateways, so sessions are not split.
  • Reporting time zone and currency match the business.

3. Set up key events (conversions) correctly

In GA4, conversions are called key events. For each one, confirm:

  • It fires once per real completion — not on every page load or on failed form attempts.
  • It fires on the confirmation (thank-you page or success message), not just on the submit click.
  • Its name is clear and consistent, e.g. generate_lead, book_call, click_to_call.
  • It is marked as a key event in Admin → Events.

Use GA4 DebugView and Tag Assistant to submit a test lead yourself and watch the event arrive. Do this on desktop and mobile.

4. Respect consent and privacy

If you advertise to visitors in regions with consent rules, implement a consent banner with Google Consent Mode v2. Without it, Google Ads may limit remarketing and conversion modelling. Make sure the banner actually updates consent signals — many banners look correct but never pass the choice to Google tags.

5. Link GA4 with your ad accounts

  • Link GA4 to Google Ads (Admin → Product links) and enable auto-tagging in Google Ads.
  • Import conversions into Google Ads either from GA4 or via the Google Ads tag — but not both for the same action, or you will double count.
  • For Meta, install the Pixel and the Conversions API so events survive browser restrictions, and deduplicate with a shared event ID.
  • Link Google Search Console so organic search queries appear alongside your other channels.

6. Track lead quality, not just lead volume

A form fill is not a customer. Capture the GCLID (Google Click ID) and UTM parameters in hidden form fields and store them with each lead in your CRM. When a lead becomes qualified or closes, upload it back to Google Ads as an offline conversion. This is the single biggest step toward ads that find buyers rather than browsers.

7. Build one simple report you will actually read

Create a Looker Studio dashboard or GA4 exploration that shows, by channel and campaign: sessions, key events, conversion rate, and cost per lead. Review it weekly. If a number looks suspiciously good — a 40% conversion rate, for example — assume tracking is broken until proven otherwise.

Quick pre-launch checklist

  1. Primary conversions defined and agreed
  2. Only one GA4 tag firing per page
  3. Key events fire once, on confirmation, on desktop and mobile
  4. Consent Mode v2 passing signals correctly
  5. GA4 linked to Google Ads, auto-tagging on, no double counting
  6. Meta Pixel + Conversions API deduplicated
  7. GCLID and UTMs saved with every lead
  8. Weekly dashboard in place

Getting these right usually takes days, not months — and it makes every future ad dollar more accountable.
